I got off work. My brain is pounding. One of my neighbors keeps hammering. I play this beat and then I die. Enjoy. Get my rap EP and then tell me to shut up

Here’s a little writeup about my next show, “A Whole Buncha Rap,” February 18th at the Old Miami with Magnum Opus, Benjamin Miles/Eddie Logix, Hugo Biggs, Chozen Few and Scav D on the turntables.  I’ll be rocking with former Freematics drummer DanZell Tolbert and possibly another special guest.

My mans Doc Illingsworth has done it again

illingsworth:

This is the 3rd song from my upcoming EP, “Bread Winner”.

In the video, I show you my very extra-special bread recipe. Oh, you thought bread wasn’t supposed to have MONDO-CRUNCH?!?! Wrong. Follow along, and make sure to duplicate my steps at your home…..but not really. Go swoop up the song at http://illingsworks.bandcamp.com/track/illingsworth-houston-rockets and then tell me how you feel about it by hitting me up at http://twitter.com/illingsworth . Mucho Thanks.

Here’s my former band the Freematics performing the opening song from our fifth show ever back in September of 2009 (which happened to be an opening slot for KRS One). Due to technical issues, this was never released…until NOW. Shoutout to Jason McCaffrey for shooting and editing the footage. More from the show to come soon!

When it comes to most local hip hop, my reaction to the music usually falls somewhere between “yeah, they’re pretty good” and “wow, they should not be anywhere near microphones under any circumstances.”  But in the case of the group Detroit CYDI, which is comprised of the trio of Doc Illingsworth, Rufio Jones and Sean Uppercut, I am unequivocally a fan.  I download all of their music, I check weekly for new videos from rapper/producer Illingsworth (be careful clicking that link, you may find yourself in a youtube black hole for days) and I’m always entertained by Rufio’s posts on the Consummate Button Masher.  They remind me of when I was in high school and wanted to be the fourth Beastie Boy (yes, full on geek mode).

Now imagine my surprise when the aforementioned Rufio wrote a feature on ME for his site!  In case you’re not aware of the life of an independent musician trying to promote their craft at the dawn of 2012, it’s basically a constant search for blogs who will review your work, or at least post a link to it.  Sometimes the owners of these sites never return your emails, or they say they’ll do a review but don’t get around to it.

So it’s really cool that someone I like and respect as a person and musician would take the time to feature me and my music.  Again, this is a site that I visit regularly for entertainment (the Cartoon Black History features are hysterical).  As it’s not really a music blog, I never would have even thought to ask Rufio to do a post on me, so I’m really grateful.  Please check out the link by clicking the title of this blog post, but also look around the rest of the site and find yourself lol-ing, rofl-ing and lmao-ing like crazy.  Support all things Detroit CYDI while you’re at it.

Give it away, give it away, give it away now

So I recently released my debut solo EP, “From Detroit to Darabougou,” and put it up on bandcamp, where I chose the “name your price” option so that fans (read: friends and family) could either pay a little something or just grab it for free.  I really just wanted my people to be able to carry my tunes around with them and play them for others if they so desired.  Seemed like an easy proposition.

Well, after the release, I was kinda scratching my head (read: feeling demoralized) at how few of my close people had downloaded the EP, but a few conversations with my friend Jason and my brother-in-law Donny made me realize that there could be a simple explanation…

In these tough economic times, a lot of people can’t afford extra things like music, but when their friend releases a project, they feel like they should pay for it.  If they are unable to do so, they would rather not download the music so as not to offend its creator instead of downloading it for free.

So while I thought that I was giving my people a choice, I may have actually put them in an uncomfortable position (after all, when you download from bandcamp, you have to give your email address, so the musician knows exactly who paid and who did not).

In order to clear up this possible misunderstanding, I’m going to type this in all caps so you get the point: PLEASE TAKE MY MUSIC FOR FREE, I AM NOT CONCERNED WITH YOU PAYING FOR IT, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE CHARGED A SPECIFIC AMOUNT!!!

Please click here and get the EP if you’ve been holding off until your next check, Chanukah gift or strip club shift.  It is my present to you this holiday season!

My song “Gimme that Latte,” a summary of my experiences in coffee growing villages in Nicaragua when I was working for a non-profit organization, was included in the Deep Cutz year-end list of Detroit music.  I’m honored to be included on the same list with artists I know, like and respect such as Doc Illingsworth, Passalacqua, Doc Waffles and Benjamin Miles.
